Blakes Hill, North Littleton, Evesham, a development of 10 Code 6 affordable homes, was recognised at the Vale of Evesham Civic Society's Awards, gaining a Certificate of Merit for "making an important contribution to the area" and has since been shortlisted in the 2014 Sustainable Housing Awards in the category of "Sustainable New Housing Project of the Year (Fewer than 25 Homes)".
Baily Garner acted as Client's Representative and Code Assessors for the Code 6 Homes. The £1.42 million project incorporated design features to maximise natural sunlight and sustainability. Heavily insulated, the properties also included renewable energy technologies in the form of south facing PVs collecting solar energy (some used to charge batteries on site), a SUDS scheme, water butts collecting rainwater to flush toilets, recycling and composting facilities. The project was unique in its community/end user bias, involving residents in early design stages and incorporating a variety of community facilities including a large communal garden and allotments. Meeting Code 6 presented challenges with air tightness and thermal barriers, together with unique design details and consideration of future management costs for our client, Rooftop Housing. With materials and labour sourced locally, the project completed 6 weeks ahead of schedule and on budget.
