Our masterplan allowed for a new gatehouse and the conversion of the existing four-storey Victorian Nightingale Ward block to provide three 15-bed low secure in-patient wards. It identified future traffic circulation and servicing within the secure compound and set out car parking and future primary care development adjacent to the site.
The internal design of the facilities was worked up in detail with stakeholder groups to ensure security and therapeutic requirements were met. All new buildings had to be robust and allow clear patient observation, as well as being designed to reduce ligature risk. Horizontal sliding sash windows for the unit were specially designed to fit within the existing apertures of the Victorian building, whilst providing an extremely secure window solution to the upper floors.
