Development of a new two form entry primary school with capacity for 420 pupils, plus a 52 place nursery, with works taking place whilst the majority of school remained occupied. Following demolition of the original 1960s school building, the under-utilised site was reduced to 5,973 m² to facilitate the new building at Moreland Primary School, with the remaining area used for a new residential development known as Kings Square.
Numerous early design meetings ensured that specific requirements for the new school were met, whilst a degree of flexibility for the future was factored in. We worked collaboratively with the contractor during the first stages of the project to enable demolition of part of the old school to take place and new build works to commence whilst the school remained operational, with weekly meetings ensuring that the impact of the site works could be assessed and any potential problems mitigated.
The new purpose-built, sustainable school delivers fully adaptable facilities, with BB101 compliant natural ventilation achieved using exposed concrete soffits (thermal mass), windows and the use of wind catchers where required. The BREEAM Excellent design was reviewed by Baily Garner’s Mechanical, Electrical and Environmental Engineers to ensure compliance.
Moreland School has been shortlisted in the 2017 Brick Awards 'Education Building' category.
