Baily Garner provided Architectural and Employer’s Agent Services for the new Spencer Block at Alcester Grammar School following a Consultancy competition. The new build teaching block provides 2 fully fitted A level standard chemistry labs, 2 detailed food technology labs and 5 standard teaching classrooms. Redesign of existing plans improved the building’s relationship to its environment and maximised accommodation possible from Education Funding Agency finance.
Following a successful planning application and a design and build procurement exercise to select the principal contractor, an Archaeological evaluation survey was needed to meet planning conditions as the site was located adjacent to an ancient monument. The survey revealed a medieval building underneath the foundations of the proposed new block. This resulted in a delay to the contract as full exploratory works took place to record the find and analyse/log all artefacts recovered (some eventually returning to the school for display).
Following this unavoidable delay, construction began on the 3 storey building within the allotted programme and the financial constraints imposed by the contract. As the existing school site was very tight and the new building occupied valuable outdoor space, a new multi-use games area was constructed adjacent to the sports hall to compensate and to meet planning conditions. The building was completed in June 2014, allowing trial classes to take place prior to full occupation in September.
