This self funded extension to provide a first floor 6th form extension over an existing ground floor toilet block, was part of a strategic programme of improvements planned for De Ferrers Academy, one of the largest secondary schools in the country. Local residents were consulted early on in the design process, as the proposed new building was particularly prominent and eye catching Inadequate footings to the existing toilet block ruled out a conventional extension, our solution was a cantilever design which fitted the brief but also created a striking external visual effect.
Work was carried out over a six month period, mainly when the school was unoccupied, but restricted access to the toilet block during term time was also managed at some stages during the works. The project completed on budget and De Ferrers Academy were delighted with the new facility, providing much needed extra resource space for their 6th form students.
Following on from this scheme, Baily Garner have worked closely with the the academy to develop a master plan for their Trent Campus. Proposals include an extension to the existing dining hall, a new lecture theatre, front entrance and a new 12 classroom teaching block. The new teaching block has been part funded by the EFA through CIF 2015/2016, with construction due to commence in July 2016.
