A complex sequencing solution allowed careful delivery of this programme of much needed DDA improvements, catch up repairs and improvements. A stream of funding was available to modernise and refurbish six One O’Clock Clubs providing nursery provision within the borough. The pre school clubs were open all year round (except weekends) which presented challenges throughout the works. Baily Garner provided a ‘one stop shop’ for all traditionally procured services and worked very closely with the client and users to inspect, prioritise and schedule works within a tight budget.
Whilst there was pressure on the design team to carry out the works in occupation this was not possible due to health and safety considerations. The alternative was to sequence the programmed works, minimising closure of the clubs utilising a regional rota-basis and allowing flexibility for parents of the temporarily closed clubs to use others clubs located nearby.
Funding rules shaped the contract period, which was restricted to just 12 weeks, with most of the works taking place in the worst winter months. The successful conclusion to this contract in terms of time, cost and quality was received with much gratitude and appreciation, not only from our client, the London Borough of Lambeth, but also the club managers. "One of the most successful play projects in the current programme” according to Rosemary Mann, Client Project Manager for Lambeth.
