The refurbishment of an empty Victorian School on a difficult restricted urban site with multiple levels, to support 4FE expansion and provide three nursery classes, achieved following detailed consultation with the school on space planning and brief development. We led on condition assessments, scheduling works and prioritising them using value management principles to achieve a practical solution within the CYPS budget. A masterplan was developed for the external areas, to take the school from a hard tarmac site to an exemplary learning space of ‘themed learning zones’ linked to year groups and the curriculum.
Innovative solutions to improve monitoring of pupils in lower external spaces was carefully designed through the use of structural glass balustrade, which also opened up the site between the two principal levels, exposing the historic and attractive detailing of the existing elevations. Using life-cycle cost profiling, key decisions on window replacement and timber repairs versus renewal were easily supported, enhancing the brief and reducing future maintenance implications for the school and borough.
