The main driver for our scheme was to provide wider, deeper gutters capable of being swept and cleaned, new insulated large module roof coverings and catwalks for roof maintenance. At the same time we addressed issues relating to poor thermal insulation, solar heat gain and the presence of asbestos. Due to the nature of the works we recommended a multi-phased programme of redesign, improvement and replacement so that the school could remain fully operational. The complex phased decanting operation involved the demolition of a disused caretaker’s house, construction of 18 temporary classrooms on an existing playground, and provision of a replacement playground elsewhere on the site.
We worked in close liaison with teaching and premises staff, the Education Department, the DCSF, Local Authority Planning Department and Building Control throughout the project. As Lead Consultant we successfully managed the health and safety implications posed by hazardous scaffolding operations, the erection of a temporary roof, the nature of the works and the ever present staff, pupils and visitors.
