Redevelopment proposals for Major Clarke House in Cranbrook, Kent included demolition and replacement of existing substandard elderly/warden accommodation with a new development to be operated and managed by Town & Country Housing Group. Twenty four new affordable rent apartments now occupy the site, providing sheltered 1 and 2 bedroom homes for older occupants, each built to meet current space and amenity standards.
Rather than construct a single building which wraps around the corner of the site, our design offered a series of interconnecting buildings, with changes in height and direction in relation to each other. Particular attention was paid to the layout and detailing of the proposed development to maintain the scale and distinct character of the adjacent Conservation Area, including use of a variety of hip roofs and gables to ensure buildings remainded in keeping with neighbouring historic properties.
The procurement of a main contractor with significant experience in Care Home provision was vital to the successful delivery of the scheme. As Employer’s Agent and Cost Consultant we ensured a robust contract enabled Town & Country to maintain the high quality design ethos and realise the original intent. The scheme includes a furnished communal common room, site wide wi-fi, full Secured by Design accreditation and decor benefitting from specialist interior designer involvement.
