An innovative design solution for the refurbishment of a 1950s care home with residents in occupation. The care home was built by the charity ‘London Homes for the Elderly’ and offered exemplary accommodation for its elderly residents.
Our dramatic and innovative design solution was to build a new corridor and staircase at each end of the building, beyond the existing corridor, and convert the existing corridor into the ensuite facilities. This meant that the required 43 bedrooms were retained whilst providing a new lift and communal facilities. Removal of the existing inner skin to the former cavity wall provided an additional 175mm to improve the layout of the new ensuite shower rooms. Following consultation, residents remained in occupation during the works. The two-phase programme proved complex and challenging but ensured that services were maintained to occupied areas whilst both the plant room and kitchen were refurbished. Key parts of the façade were left untouched to ensure that the character of the building was retained.
